Graduate students
We are taking students this fall. Students are welcome to email after admission to the Division of Biology and Biomedical Sciences program. We have both computational and experimental projects with NIH funding ready for your creativity! You do not need to know programming to start computational biology! We also have various protein engineering projects coming up that require more experimental than computational skills.
Undergraduate students

Possible Project Scenarios for new graduate students
Graduate Students joining lab learn how to map sequence diversity onto protein structures, utilize sequence information and macromolecular modeling for strategic redesign of proteins (e.g. for immunogens) or for targeting fast-evolving pathogens, through the design of protein-protein interactions. For each design process, the student will draw information from evolution or they will learn how to generate in-house large-scale data through directed evolution. By combining oligonucleotide-chip synthesis which allows us to test thousands of designed sequences with next-generation sequencing we will be able to explore the sequence space and its implication on molecular function. To optimize our computational design algorithms, we use machine learning on existing or self-generated data sets which will be a valuable skill set for a graduate student in a time where biology is experiencing a data explosion.
Purely experimentally projects are also available. We are building genetic selection methods for immunogenicity! Ask Eva about the details.
